Approximately one year ago, as Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch prepared for its debut, many speculated whether the studio could recover from the earlier misstep of its live-action Snow White and maintain its impressive track record of successful remakes. As it turned out, their winning streak continued unabated. Consequently, the live-action rendition of Moana is poised to enter a significantly more assured market when it premieres on July 10, despite its most recent trailer suggesting a near shot-for-shot recreation of the original animated feature. This includes Dwayne Johnson once again embodying Maui, complete with his signature animated tattoos.
The Moana franchise also benefits from a substantial reservoir of pre-existing popularity, further amplified by its animated sequel, Moana 2. This film, initially conceived as a Disney+ series before being repurposed for a theatrical run, became a massive hit in 2024.
This forthcoming live-action interpretation of Moana features Catherine Lagaʻaia in the leading role, starring alongside Johnson, who previously lent his voice to Maui in the animated films.
Disney additionally released a new featurette, “Artistry of Moana,” offering an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the movie’s production. It includes insights from director Thomas Kail, cast members Laga’aia and Johnson, as well as the film’s costume designer and choreographer.
The supporting cast includes John Tui as Moana’s father, Chief Tui; Frankie Adams as Moana’s mother, Sina; and Rena Owen as Moana’s Gramma Tala. Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated features, serves as one of the executive producers for the film. The soundtrack boasts original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina, with Mancina also responsible for the original score.
A brand new poster was also unveiled today:
Catch Moana in theaters beginning July 10.
