Day 4 will see the conclusion of the remaining Round of 16 matches at the WTA Merida tournament. Among the notable players scheduled to compete are Jasmine Paolini, the 2024 Wimbledon finalist, and American standout Emma Navarro. As is our custom here at LWOT, we offer predictions for all the tournament action, but we invite you to share your thoughts on who you believe will emerge victorious.
WTA Merida Day 4 Predictions
Jessica Bouzas Maneiro vs Magdalena Frech
Head-to-head: Frech 2-1 Bouzas Maneiro
Bouzas Maneiro secured a comfortable win against Heather Watson in her opening match, while Frech faced a more challenging encounter with Maria Timofeeva. Both athletes will aim to leverage their distinct strengths. Bouzas Maneiro’s forehand exhibits greater power, whereas the Polish player boasts a superior backhand. Given the slow hardcourt conditions, Frech is slightly more inclined to maintain consistency and secure a hard-fought victory.
Prediction: Frech in 3
Ann Li vs Zeynep Sonmez
Head-to-head: Sonmez 1-0 Li
Their sole prior meeting took place at the 2024 Merida event, where Sonmez claimed an easy win without needing to be at her peak. Since then, Li has shown considerable improvement, enjoying her best season in 2025. Despite Li’s advancements and higher ranking, the Turkish player is expected to win. She conceded only two games in her first-round match, and the prevailing conditions marginally suit her game more than Li’s.
Prediction: Sonmez in 3
Emma Navarro vs Shuai Zhang
Head-to-head: Zhang 2-0 Navarro
Navarro’s recent dip in form and her prior head-to-head record against Zhang present a tough challenge for the 2024 US Open semifinalist. Their previous two encounters both occurred in China, Zhang’s home territory. The court speeds in those tournaments were faster than what’s found in Merida. This difference offers the agile and robust Navarro a better chance to wear down Zhang. While a third win for the experienced veteran isn’t impossible, Navarro is favored to prevail.
Prediction: Navarro in 3
Jasmine Paolini vs Priscilla Hon
Head-to-head: First meeting
Paolini has endured three consecutive straight-sets defeats, making it crucial for her to regain momentum before the Sunshine Double. Though Hon is a skilled player, this particular matchup presents Paolini with an opportune moment to rediscover her form. Hon herself was on a four-match losing streak before arriving in Merida. Her qualifying victories and a narrow triumph over Renata Zarazua aren’t enough to convince me she will overcome the Italian.
Prediction: Paolini in 2
